What will you receive by joining us for a Writing Table Mini Retreat?

  • Time to write – the best part of the Writing Table is having designated time to write. In this summer’s Mini Writing Retreats you will have an extended time, and you can write humanely without binging or rushing!
  • Planning Ideas – with each Retreat you will receive a planning document to help you set up for your time at the Writing Table. By planning ahead you will be able to maximize your accomplishments and set up momentum to keep your project going.
  • Accountability to a community of writers – this makes the writing time both easier and more fun, honestly.
  • Better writing habits – you will be building your habits and becoming an everyday writer. Daily writing is a proven path to more writing and publishing.
  • Focus on process – at the Writing Table you never have to say what you are working on; the focus is on the how of getting writing done; certainly some writers share the what of their work, and occasionally we do a show & celebrate week!
  • Breathing and intentions – at points during the retreat we will take time for centering breath work, focusing on intentions, and silence for writing in twenty-five minute pomodoros (aka POMS). Research tells us that 25 minutes is an optimal amount of time to focus before the mind and body need to reset. The retreat is organized into poms to maximize focus and attention on your project.
  • Camaraderie –  you will not have to write alone, but with fellow women of color writers. It’s a little like body-doubling. When others are writing, each person feels more inclined to write as well.
  • Encouraging and supportive coaching – we will take a little time to share strategies at the end of the writing retreat, and Eileen offers gentle coaching and encouragement.

Not only is it hard to get published, books by women of color are disproportionately among the 4000 books banned in counties across the US in the last five years. A recent study of banned books “revealed a stark racial disparity in book bans. Authors of color were 4.5 times more likely to be banned than white authors, particularly women of color. This is largely because women of color were more likely to write children’s books featuring diverse characters.” We also know that beloved Black authors of adult fiction like Toni Morrison, and non-fiction like Isabel Wilkerson, and many other Black women are also among the politically motivated book bans of recent years.

We need your voice in books, articles, and opinion pieces. And we want to be part of the support system that helps you move from idea to publication. The Writing Table has been an empowering and nurturing space for many authors, and we want to deliberately and accessibly make the support available to you!

People who attend The Writing Table mini retreats work on writing for sermons, books, vlogs, academic articles, teaching plans and evaluations, difficult emails, and personal journals among other things. One of the beauties of The Writing Table is you are never required to share what you were writing, unless you desire to share it. Instead, we create a carefully tended circle of protection for your writing. And if people desire to share what they’re working on, it’s always welcome as well. Both approaches are completely welcome! Whether you’re trying to get tenure or simply plan a sermon series, or write your weekly blog, I would be honored to support you in that work!

As I like to remind everyone: writing is a practice that must be done alone, yet it is best done in community.

Join fellow women of color professors, pastors, students, poets, business writers, full time authors, and journal keepers on December 5th at the Writing Table.
